Decking costs

Updated

Sloping gardens vary enormously, so we don't publish prices. Here's what makes the difference to a deck's cost in Durham.

Short answer

On Durham's slopes, height and levels drive the cost: taller posts, bracing, more steps and guarding. Drainage and retaining-wall work can add more. Access up steps or lanes takes time. Composite and hardwood cost more than softwood. We survey for free and give an quote.

Height and levels

The steeper the garden, the taller the posts and the more levels and steps. This is usually the biggest factor in Durham.

Steps and guarding

Long flights, landings, handrails and balustrades are essential on slopes, and each is priced separately.

Ground and walls

Drainage, gravel and any retaining-wall repairs add to the cost but protect the deck.

Access

Carrying materials up steps or along narrow lanes takes longer.

Boards

Softwood is cheapest; composite and hardwood cost more but last longer and need less care.

Retaining walls

If an old wall near the deck is leaning or cracked, it may need repair before we build. We'll point it out at the survey and price it separately so you can see the cost clearly.

Lighting

Step lights and handrail lights are worth considering on any hillside deck. They're priced as their own item.

Building in stages

On a large terraced garden, building one or two levels now and the rest later can spread the cost. We'll design the whole scheme first so later levels join neatly.

How we quote

The price depends on the frame and footings, bracing, boards, steps, guarding, drainage, lighting and any removal. The survey visit and quote are free, with no pressure.

FAQ

Do steep sites cost more?

Generally, yes, because of taller posts, bracing, steps and guarding. We'll show exactly where the cost goes.

Why does access matter so much in Durham?

Many hillside homes have no level route to the back garden, so materials are carried by hand. It adds time, which we include in the quote.
